About me
Mary L. Gray is a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and a leading scholar of the social and ethical dimensions of data-driven AI systems. Trained as an anthropologist, her research examines how digital infrastructures shape labor, identity, and human rights. She leads Project Resolve, a multi-partner initiative designing privacy-preserving, community-governed data ecosystems for patient advocacy communities, advancing data trusts that enable collective stewardship of sensitive health data. Gray is the co-author of Ghost Work (2019), documenting the hidden human labor behind AI systems and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2020 for her influential research on digital economies and society.
